How-To Guides
Scenario-based walkthroughs that combine several features to finish a real
business job end to end. Follow the real interface, step by step, and finish
with a working result.
Backbuild Desktop
The native app for Windows and macOS, with Linux coming soon: the same
complete Backbuild workspace you use in the browser, in its own window, signed
in as the same account with the same data. It adds a few things only a native
app can do, running a local AI agent on your own machine, opening local files
and repositories, popping a remote desktop into a real window, and unlocking
your vault without repeating two-factor on a computer you trust. Free to
download and use.
Backbuild Desktop Overview What the app is, whether it costs anything, how it relates to the web app, the platforms and requirements, and where to go for each job. Installing & First Launch Download the right build, clear the one-time operating-system safety prompt safely, install the small Windows prerequisite, sign in, and understand how updates work. Local AI Agents & Files on Your Device Run an AI agent on your own machine with your own installed command-line tool, open files that live in a local folder or repository, and open Backbuild links straight into the app. Remote Desktop in the Native App Pop a remote session out into its own window, drag files between the remote machine and your own desktop, share your screen, and keep a machine reachable. Signing In, Sync, Device Unlock & Security Single sign-on, unlocking your vault without repeating two-factor on a trusted computer, offline behavior, and what the app is and is not allowed to connect to. Deploying to a Fleet For administrators: install across many computers quietly with your management tool, prepare the prerequisites, keep everyone on the current build, and answer a security review. Backbuild
The SaaS building platform. Build any product, from project management,
CRM, and ticketing to an AI document store, and launch it as a multi-tenant
SaaS with billing, feature flags, and enterprise security built in.
Platform Overview Architecture, capabilities, and how Backbuild adapts to your domain. Organizations & Teams Multi-tenant architecture, roles, permissions, and team management. Projects Create and manage projects with entities, files, tasks, and workflows. Entities & Data Model Entity types, entities, relationships, views, and files let you model any domain. AI Assistant & Search Natural language queries, semantic search, and custom AI skills. SaaS Builder Package your config into a product, set pricing, connect Stripe, and launch. MCP & Agent Integration Connect AI agents via MCP, drive CLI coding agents autonomously. Backbuild Mail Email at your own domain, with guided DNS setup, real-time sync, folders, labels, filters, and full-text search. Backbuild Calendar A full calendar: recurring events, guests and replies, multiple calendars and sharing, find-a-time, time zones, and two-way sync with Google, Microsoft 365, and Apple or CalDAV. Backbuild Contacts A shared address book: rich contact records, multiple channels and addresses, favorites, instant search, and email a contact straight from their record. Containers & Remote Desktop
On-demand cloud computers you launch from a project: a terminal, a full VS Code
editor, and an optional graphical desktop, with a private home folder that
survives shutdown and credit metering that charges only while a container runs.
Plus the browser-based Remote Desktop engine for reaching your own machines.
Available on every plan, on usage credits.
Backbuild Containers Overview What a container is, launching your first one, connecting to the three surfaces, what it costs, and where to go for each job. Launching a Container The launch screen, reading a size card's vCPU, memory, credits-per-hour, backend and region, the desktop toggle, and the status lifecycle from queued to running. Terminal, VS Code & Desktop The three surfaces in depth: a terminal that reconnects to the same shell, Visual Studio Code in the browser, and the optional graphical desktop. Managing, Persistence & Credits Your containers list, terminating cleanly, exactly what persists across shutdown, and how credits and idle teardown prevent surprise bills. Policies & Administration For admins: restrict sizes, backends, and regions with server-side enforcement, per-project overrides, scope a contractor, data residency, bring your own compute, and resell containers. Agents, Automation & the API Drive a container from an AI agent: a self-authenticating browser, page and desktop control tools, the isolation posture for untrusted code, and the REST API. Remote Desktop See and control your own machines and cloud desktops from the browser over an encrypted, post-quantum connection, governed by per-device trust and roles. Virtual Workers
Named AI employees your organization hires to do real operational work:
triaging an inbox, drafting support replies, running your skills, and doing
project and code work in a container. Each keeps human-style shifts, runs under
your roles and audit trail, starts supervised so you approve its output, and
runs on usage credits. Available on every plan.
Virtual Workers Overview What a worker is, hiring your first one supervised in minutes, what it costs, and where to go for each job. Hiring & Configuring a Worker The hire wizard and per-worker editor: persona and role, runtime and execution mode, mailbox and manager, shift and holidays, and operating instructions. AI Connection & Budgets Run on usage credits or a provider account you link, connect a worker's own coding-agent account, set a weekly token budget, and watch burn in real time. Autonomy & Approvals The supervised-first default, the per-capability autonomy dial, the actions that always need a person, the approval queue, and the instant pause. Support Workers Assign a worker and a skill to a ticket workflow stage, drafts posted as internal notes, reply versus resolve, and nights-and-weekends coverage. Developer Workers The Developer role in a container, bring-your-own coding-agent account, the no-push floor, opening a change for review, and least-privilege repository access. Security & Governance The worker as a managed non-human identity, deny-by-default least privilege, the append-only audit trail, credential handling, isolation, and prompt-injection resistance. Help Desk & Support Tickets
A complete support and issue-tracking system built into your workspace: your
customers and teammates file tickets, your agents work them in a console with
saved views, boards, and bulk actions, and a data-driven workflow engine models
everything from a support queue to an engineering bug tracker. Virtual Workers
can staff a stage under human supervision, and builders can let their own
subscribers file tickets routed to the right organization. Included on every
plan, unlimited on paid plans.
Help Desk Overview The two sides of the help desk, filing or working your first ticket, what one tool replaces, and where to go for each job. Filing & Tracking a Ticket The Open Ticket dialog, the describe and the privacy-safe reproduce flows, tracking your own tickets, replying, and the notifications bell. The Tickets Console Quick filters with counts, search versus a structured filter builder, the List, Grid, Board, and Table views, saved views, multi-sort, bulk actions, and export. Working a Ticket The Client view and Work log tabs, public replies versus internal notes, editing your own message with version history, the meta panels, and the reproduction timeline. Ticket Types, Workflows & SLAs Types like Bug and Epic, custom states and transitions, per-state SLAs, approvals and step-up gates, parent-child hierarchy, labels, relations, and custom fields. AI Support with Virtual Workers Assign a worker and a skill to a workflow stage, drafts posted as internal notes, per-ticket budgets, and the human-approval floor. Administration & White-Label Categories, routing rules, SLA policies, canned responses, and exposing projects so your own subscribers can file tickets routed to you. The API, MCP & Automation Drive the whole help desk over the public REST API and the native MCP tools, and understand what is programmable under enforced access. Security, Privacy & Governance Strict tenant isolation, the audit trail, encryption, retention and deletion, and how AI is bounded from crossing tenants or overpromising. Backbuild Finances
The accounting and back-office app in your workspace: send invoices and get
paid, log expenses, bills, and mileage, keep a real double-entry ledger,
reconcile your bank, run and record payroll, and read the profit-and-loss,
balance sheet, and cash-flow statements. Free for teams up to 50 seats, with
the double-entry machinery running invisibly until you want it.
Backbuild Finances Overview What the back office does today, sending your first invoice in minutes, why the books are real even when you do not see them, and where to go for each job. Invoicing & Getting Paid Invoices, customers, payment terms, recurring invoices, receiving payments, syncing Stripe payments into the books, and accounts-receivable aging. Expenses, Bills & Mileage Log a cost, enter and pay a bill, track vendors and 1099 contractors, capture receipts for extraction, and record mileage that posts to your ledger. The Accounting Ledger The chart of accounts, true double-entry, journal entries and safe reversals, classes and custom fields for dimensional reporting, and the accounting method. Banking & Reconciliation Bank and asset accounts, the register, transfers, bank rules that auto-categorize, deposits and undeposited funds, and reconciling to a statement. Payroll & Contractors The team roster, employees, running and recording a pay run that posts to your ledger, contractor payments, 1099s, and the honest boundary on tax filing. Reports & Sales Tax Profit and loss, balance sheet, trial balance, aging, cash flow, budgets versus actual, saved and scheduled reports, and sales-tax tracking and liability. Importing & Migrating Bring in a chart of accounts, customers, vendors, and transactions from a spreadsheet or from QuickBooks, map columns, dry-run, and validate the landing. Access, Security & the API Finance roles, the audit trail, encryption and tenant isolation, giving your accountant scoped access, exporting everything, and driving the books over the REST API. Backbuild Secrets
The zero-knowledge, post-quantum password and secrets manager in the free
workspace: encrypted vaults for logins, cards, notes, API keys, SSH keys, and
infrastructure secrets, role-based vault sharing with your team, safe autofill,
a device factor for instant unlock, and machine and AI-agent access that never
exposes a plaintext value. Backbuild stores only ciphertext it cannot read.
Backbuild Secrets Overview What you get, setting your master password, what zero-knowledge means for you, what is free, and where to go for each job. Vaults, Items & the Password Generator Organize vaults into a tree, create every kind of entry, use typed fields and a masked field for keys and certificates, generate strong passwords, and restore an earlier value from history. Sharing Vaults with Your Team The vault-level sharing model, owner, manager, and member roles, how a share is delivered without sending a password, confirming a recipient, and cutting off access completely. Autofill with the Browser Extension Fill logins safely on the sites you authorize, save and update logins as you sign in, and understand why autofill sometimes refuses on purpose. Unlocking, Device Factor & Recovery Unlock faster with a device gesture, change your master password, and every way back in, including the Emergency Kit and administrator-assisted recovery. Machines, Integrations & AI Agents Authorize a device or container, release a credential to a connected integration at use-time, give a Virtual Worker its own vault, and let AI agents work with secrets they never see. Administration, Zero-Knowledge & Compliance Identity lifecycle and offboarding, enforcing multi-factor and device factors, the audit trail, the honest compliance posture, and the exact cryptography for reviewers. Usage, Storage & Credits
How Backbuild meters usage: one prepaid pool of universal usage credits,
free allowances on every plan, and a hard guarantee of no surprise bills.
Usage & Credits Overview The model in one minute: what is free, what is metered, and the prepaid guarantee. Universal Usage Credits What a credit buys, packages, 3-month rollover, and how monthly overage settles. Real-Time Session Minutes Active sync time explained: the free 10,800 minutes and what happens beyond them. File vs Database Storage Which pool your data lands in, the rates, freeing space, and behavior at the limit. clean and master audio; and compose music. Free in-browser export on every
plan, an optional cloud master render on the paid plans, your own voice and
AI keys metered at zero, and change-aware caching so an unchanged re-render
costs nothing.
Backbuild Studio Overview What you get, making your first production, exactly what is free and what draws credits, and where to go for each job.
