Several of these surfaces will be new to a reader coming from Airtable: entity types, saved views, SaaS packages, and the Tool Builder. Each has a specific job, a specific mechanism, and a specific price.

Entity types, records, and typed relationships

An entity type is the schema of one kind of record: a Deal, a Supplier, an Asset. Each type defines thirty-one field types, including references to other records, people, groups, and roles, and embedded documents, sheets, slides, and calendars, with required flags and validation the platform enforces on every save. Custom views: layouts, forms, and per-role working surfaces

A saved view is a named definition over one dataset: the entity type to show, filters, sorting, grouping, and a view type of table, board, list, calendar, timeline, or gantt. Views are private by default and shareable deliberately, and every execution re-filters rows to the running viewer’s access on the server, so sharing a view definition never widens data access. That property is what turns views into per-role working surfaces: give the sales role a pipeline board definition and the finance role an invoicing table over the same records, and each sees exactly what their role permits. On rendering, the current state is specific: the app opens a saved view as a paginated grid today, dedicated layouts are coming soon, the help desk tickets surface already renders a drag and drop board and a gantt chart, and Backbuild Calendar renders full calendar layouts. On forms, the shape is different from Airtable but the job is done: the entity editor renders each type’s fields as a validated form and refuses a save that violates the schema, so member data entry is a form today, while a public intake surface for outsiders is on the roadmap.

SaaS packages: the marketplace, and the easy app button

A SaaS package is the answer to two Airtable pitches at once, the extensions marketplace and Interface Designer’s turn-your-base-into-an-app. Packaging is assembly, not a rebuild: a package bundles the entity types, views, screens, and seed data you already built with pricing plans, branding, and custom domains into an installable, multi-tenant product. Screens come in three kinds: core screens the platform renders, view-based screens backed by a saved view, and custom screens with a fully custom layout, targeted to audiences by rule, which is how a package ships a different app to each role without code. A finished package publishes to the Backbuild marketplace, installable by other organizations and sellable on your pricing, with release management and staged rollouts behind it. A packaged product also publishes its own marketing pages on custom domains; a general website and landing page builder for the workspace itself is marked coming soon on the pricing page. The SaaS Builder is a paid capability, part of Backbuild Pro at 49 US dollars per seat per month, where Airtable’s Interface Designer is included on every Airtable plan, with the number of published interfaces gated by tier. The full range runs from a shared view to a shipped product.

Airtable’s packaged sync is a catalog of prebuilt connections; Backbuild’s equivalent is a workflow you build once and own. A custom tool, designed in the Tool Builder, declares its contract and authentication and calls the external system. An automation rule then runs it on a schedule or on record, email, calendar, and help desk events, and signed webhooks push changes outward with a delivery log. For heavier work, the same automation can dispatch an AI worker into a real container, a machine with a browser, a desktop, a terminal, and the full Linux toolset, which reaches systems that have no API at all. Airtable is the longer-established product in this category, and several of its strengths are things Backbuild does not match today.

Airtable renders grid, kanban, calendar, gallery, list, timeline, and gantt layouts in place, with drag and drop across all of them, and that rendering polish is real. A larger first-party connector catalog

Airtable ships a large native integration library and packaged one-way and multi-source sync, and if the requirement is connecting a specific tool in one click, its catalog is simply bigger today. Backbuild covers external connections with provider integrations, the full REST API, signed webhooks, MCP, and custom tools built in the Tool Builder wired to automations, which reaches anything with an API but is built, not clicked. The gap is first-party catalog breadth.

Public intake forms today

Airtable forms collect submissions from anyone on every plan. In Backbuild, structured data entry inside the workspace already runs through the entity editor, which renders each type’s fields as a validated form, but a public intake form surface for people outside the workspace has not shipped yet, so anonymous lead capture flows through the API until it ships.

Mobile distribution and a packaged scale tier

Airtable’s iOS and Android apps are in the app stores today, and it packages HyperDB tables that scale to 100 million records.
